Def Jam Launches Roc La Familia

Universal Music Group's Def Jam Recordings division is launching Roc La Familia, a new imprint aimed at the exploding urban Latin market.

The first signing to the New York-based label is Houston-based Aztek (check out our interview section,) whose recent mixtape contained the track "Problem Houston," featuring superstar Jay-Z.

Juan Perez will serve as Roc La Familia president. He is Jay-Z's longtime partner in his New York studio Baseline and the 40/40 Club. A Def Jam spokeswoman said there would be a dedicated label staff, in a number to be determined.

Roc La Familia's acts will encompass reggaeton, reggae, calypso, tribal and West Indian music. Its product will be marketed, sold and distributed through Def Jam.

"Roc La Familia will leverage the extensive resources of Def Jam to introduce fans to cultures (to which) they would not normally be exposed," Jay-Z said. "World music has evolved as a genre; it now blends contemporary styles such as hip-hop, rock and electronica with traditional and roots music."

While Roc La Familia intends to address a fairly broad variety of Latin and Caribbean styles, the label is obviously targeting the urban Latin market, which has made reggaeton the sensation du jour.

Aug 2 Preorder. As one of the most sadistic street villains out there, Brooklyn's Necro has built up a substantial fanbase with his solo releases "I Need Drugs", "Gory Days", and "The Prefix For Death", not to mention building a solid foundation with is own Psycho+Logical Records imprint. haha, dar Dead Prez va plac? ei ce mesaje transmit? nu au si ei ceva probleme cu mesajul "pozitiv-constructivist" ? e valabil pt toate trupele/artistii (inclusiv nea immortal technique) care arunca ceva muguri de ura rasiala in piese.

Two of the underground's favorite sons, Danger Mouse and MF Doom, have come together to release a collaborative effort titled DANGERDOOM: The Mouse and the Mask.
The album was inspired by the Cartoon Network's series of late-night animated shows known as Adult Swim. And according to Epitaph Records president Andy Kaulkin - who is releasing the project - the mix of different ingredients has turned into a delectable offering.

"Danger Mouse and Doom are both brilliant at taking chunks of pop culture and reshaping them into art. The context of Adult Swim makes this already promising collaboration truly inspired," Kaulkin said.

DANGERDOOM will feature skits and voices from Adult Swim's popular shows, as well as special appearances by Ghostface, Cee-Lo and Talib Kweli.

The album is slated to drop on October 11th on Epitaph Records.

Danger Mouse is best known for his conceptual album The Grey Album, in which he combined Jay-Z's Black Album and the Beatles' White Album. He also has a collaborative album with Cee-Lo in the works called Gnarls Barkley.

MF Doom came up in the group KMD. After a five-year hiatus, he re-emerged as the metal-masked MF Doom, taken from the comic super-villain Dr. Doom.

He has released numerous critically acclaimed albums, including Operation: Doomsday and Mmm...Food. Currently, MF Doom reportedly has a project with Ghostface in the works.

NAS SPITS ETHER AT 50.....

Finally! After 50 Cent mouthed off on "Piggy Bank" we all wondered how and when the artists that he took shots at would respond. The one artist in particular that everyone has kept an eye on is God's Son himself- Nas. So just when 50 Cent thought he was safe from Nas' "Ether" (and while dealing with some beef on all angles), DJ Statik Selektah debuted a new song on Sirius Radio, where Nas sounded off with a new diss track that has been titled either "MC Burial" or "Don't Body Ya Self." The track features Nas blasting off on 50 with lines like....

"They say Jada defeated them, Joe's too street for him/ What's next? I guess it's for Nas to ether him." And....

"You's a sucker for death if I'm a sucker for love.... scared of me so you talk about family members like I can't point out your grandma, nigga." And....

"I'm in the streets like old graffiti/I'm hearin' wankstas talkin' greasy/whether broke or rich my friend/Nasir bring that career to an end"

Damn 50....whatcha gonna do? Nas wasn't really fuckin around with this one and with his tentatively titled NASDAQ Dow Jones album creeping up on us, you know that Nas may not be finished airing the G-Unit general out. So what we are wondering is how much longer 50 can get dissed and sit by idle. Will he come back or is he just getting hit with too many verbal jabs. - Andreas Hale
