Mos Def is one my true inspirations and to celebrate the release of his new LP, we’re doing different things all week. Today I posted some very vintage Mos Def that I happened upon at Dr. Wax on the southside of Chicago more than a decade ago. It’s definitely something for the Mos Def fan.

Mos Def’s new LP, The Ecstatic, will hit stores on June 9th. I’ll be among the first in line to cop the new CD, as I’ve done with each Mos Def album since he released Black On Both Sides approximately 10 years ago. I don’t know the exact first Mos Def track that I heard, maybe it was The Lyricist Lounge track, “Body Rock”. It could have been on ATCQ’s Love Movement…I’m not sure, and since the internet wasn’t running things back then, learning of a new artist was a little something extra special. I was a Black Star fan, but it was Mos’ Black On Both Sides that flipped a different switch inside me that still has yet to be turned off. Similar in the way that I searched high and low for Beastie Boys records I didn’t have, my daily trips to Dr. Wax always included a stop at the Mos Def section hoping to see something new, rare, or unreleased. One such trip turned up profitable, as I came across The Underground Album, which at the time I thought was some crazy limited release or something in my excitement. Obviously, it’s more of a collection of tracks that someone put together, ran off with their CD burner and took to mom and pop stores as an official bootleg. Anyway, the tracks are still dope, and in honor of the new release we offer up The Mighty Mos Def: The Underground Album featuring songs such as “Universal Magnetic”, “Little Brother”, and “A Soldier’s Dream”. Grab it below and look for more the rest of the week.
