Dimlite
This Is Embracing
Sonar Kollektiv 2006

01. Locked
02. Lullaby for Gastric Ulcer
03. Outernational Duet [ft. Gaby Hernandez]
04. 130 Seconds Glimpse [Interlude]
05. Hungeryears & Advanced Communication
06. Oh Star... [Interlude]
07. Sophisticated Youthpower [ft. Buddy Leezle]
08. Bougainvillea Chamber
09. Cosmic Echoes in the Mockery Room
10. The Way Blood Travels
11. Stairway to the Good Shredder [TSE Intermission]
12. Occasionally Touching Earth
13. Now Walk
14. Count Your Sunrises
15. Es Gsch?¤nk [Outro]

Been playing the shit out of this album ever since it came out, and I'm not even much into Jazzanova's Sonar Kollektiv. Not sure what it is about Dimlite, but definitely something to investigate. Being a rather well-mined genre lately, "hiptronica" seems hard to make impressive at this point; still, new producers regularly pop in and make it worth following. Dmitri Grimm's cred is well established with another LP last year plus a handful of 12"s for the same label, and you'd be surprised how rounded and mature his sound got already. Sometimes abrasive, other times gorgeous, it's thouroughly dense and screams quality all over. Vocal guests Gaby Hernandez (Build and Ark/The Life Force Trio) and Buddy Leezle (215/TFK). Congrats for putting out something fresh, accomplished, and not overblown. Headphone candy...

Bracken
Heathens EP
Anticon 2006

A1. Heathens
A2. Heathens [Redone by Alias and Why?]
B1. We Cut the Tapes and Scatter
B2. Out

Lead single from Hood leader Chris Adams. Him and Anticon have crossed paths before to great effect (remember Cold House?), and this comes right up my alley, after the Tarsier stuff that's been so tiring. Great cut-ups, melodies, Casio beats, all sounding like a more traditional Subtle... although not quite. Just wait until the full length drops.

Slumber Tides
Miasmah 2006

01. Snow Airport
02. Submergence
03. The Tired Diary [Revisited]
04. Arups Gate
05. Caesura

People asking me how do I find new music, new artists. Aside from a few helpful webzines and forums, yes, I just follow labels. You can't really do that with the majors, of course, but smaller labels with a well-defined aesthetic are less likely to let you down. Early examples for me would be Mo' Wax and Ninja Tune, going through Anticon and Morr Music, which rarely steered me wrong; but times change and taste follows, so I mostly stick to Bully, Arable, Leaf, and Type lately. There, I've said it - go on now and make your own fancy blog. Not before I let you in on Miasmah, the perverted netlabel threatening to go after our money. Run by Deaf Center member Erik Skodvin (also signed on Type), it concentrates on more organic sounds, in the fields between film scores and alternative atmospherics, trying to find "music for scenes and places". You may as well think of something somber/ moving/ tranquil/ neo-classical, and indeed, finding exactly what you expected rarely feels as positive. After Silva and Plexus II, this is their 3rd "real" installment. Taking off...

Ginnungagap
Remeindre
Latitudes 2005

01. Duel Ravens
02. Guenevere of the Ganges
03. Black Snow, Blood Mountain
04. Aurgelmir

How precious is the name Ginnungagap? If it wasn't taken by this band, then it would definitely be the name of my blog, or my record shop, or even my first born!! Southern Lord subdivision Latitudes purveys a series of unique recording sessions, inviting several friend-artists from different backgrounds (Grails, Sole & Pedestrian, D?¤lek, Shit & Shine, etc.) use their studio for ONE to TWO days most. The lovechild of Stephen O'Malley, Alexander Tucker, and Anthony Silvester (type of folks you always see mentioned on elitist websites), Ginnungagap is second in that series and you're right not to expect much, but maybe just got lucky. The sonics sure are nice: a great "sound of melting instruments" sort of vibe; plenty various acoustics, many of which seem Indian in origin (harmonium, tamboura...); all sloping in some thick shamanistic psychedelia, dark and rare, introspective, mystical (though unrelated to Buddha Bar compilations, sorry); one which really tugs at the heart strings if you're in the right mood; for resting, forgetting, going beyond, leaving behind, having those goose bumps... Phew. I fully approve. Best way to listen is actually half-conscious - make what you want out of that.

OuMuPo (i.e. "Ouvroir de Musiques Potentielles"/"Workshop for Potential Musics") has proven a successful concept already, masterminded by Ici d'Ailleurs, fine label based in Nancy: having producers revisit their back catalog by rigorously strict principles - from selection limitations (not more than two tracks of one album) to time restraints (the precisely 42 min. stretch), while keeping remixing duties in mind. Quite a few (as listed on oumupo.com) have taken that challenge, and we get around to volume 6, with Krush on the handles - playing by house rules, but injecting something of his own. As expected, it's more a producer's mixtape or "mix album" than a deejay set; the next "stepping stone" to abstraction. Lately we've seen him stray further and further away from his dusty-crate sample origins, adding computers and such, to mostly interesting directions; I'd say this comes as proper challenge for new grounds, though not by all means unfamiliar:

- to use the catalogues as primary material;
- to build the whole mix in a re-construction style;
- to be a "live drummer without drumsticks" throughout the whole mix;
- to take the "mix CD" to a new level, maintaining the KRUSHness to the max;
- to build a story that anyone can visualise by simply listening;
- to maintain a vibe that makes even my own head nodding without knowing it.

In other news, I just got a fresh free Tempa mix done for 2600 Recordings.
Absolutely mindblowing stuff, I promise.

The Digil Parker Project

01. Juando Theme
02. Funparr
03. Orirac

06. Digil Parker

08. Leave It

13. Funparr Theme
14. Juando

Bit overwhelmed myself by the amount of quality releases; almost forced to post daily to keep up, and would have enough to cover the next couple of weeks. Oh well, drama aside, I'll go with Automotive for now, 'cause it seems like a nice follow-up to OuMuPo 6, and then again, because these guys keep spreading left and right themselves, so you gotta start somewhere. "One of Europe's most prolific electronica duos", as they're rightfully described, the Funcken brothers got at least two projects going on each year, from the more established Funckarma/ Shadow Huntaz to offshoots like Cane, Cenik, Android, Quench... who's counting anyway?!... Labels, styles and genres aside, it usually comes down to highly atmospheric, self-propulsive works, sharing an ability for ambivalent emotions - something Automotive, three years in the pipeline, manages to grab and hold on tight. Some refer to Digil Parker as their "jazzier" side, but there's really too much here to blog about or just absorb straight off - stuff you need exploring/ judging by yourself. Small hint: clarinet & sax vs. electric bass & crispy beats, and yes, something like a Dutch, sedated DJ Krush would probably sound like at times.

[geek] Too much traffic on my files, folks. I'd be the last one to complain, but numbers get high and downloads get slow, so please: don't use the axi link unless you got denied by sspace, which still is a good server for your needs (counted 70 successful downloads yesterday only). And also, if you wanna repost my shit on large forums, consider re-upping yourself on a different axi link or whatever, to keep mine ventilated. Yes, I'm talking to you, my Slovakian friend. Thanks. Hu Vibrational
Universal Mother: Boonghee Music 3
Soul Jazz 2006

02. Luna
03. We Call to Her

10. Mandala
11. M'Bip
12. Ninety-Six Lotus Blossoms
13. Red Ochre Cowrie
14. In the Field [ft. Yusef Lateef]

Die musik von Hu Vibrational ist ein mix aus perkussiven Afrikanischen rhythmen und Afro-Jazz mit elementen aus hip-hop und elektronik.

Here's for my many German readers, and I think the Japanese are next in line tomorrow, and then, why not, the Russians and the Jews, and I swear I've spotted a couple Vietnamese! Well, let's just hope they all like getting down to the Boonghee: "a new dance music (sic!) that there's no specific rhythm to; a gathering of grooves" with deep percussive (handmade included) flavas - very rhythmic, circular, and ummm universal!, which as you see today has come to Holy Trilogy. The "world music" tag - oh, I have a problem with that really, especially when self-imposed, just 'cause "world music" is too damn broad (bit like "indie" innit) and too damn "spiritual bla" to ever actually grab me, often relying on chants and painful culture shocks to make its point. Still, you can find some nice and worthy artists at times, which rise out of your cynicism, ahem. Founding members of Hu Vibrational, Adam Rudolph and Hamid Drake once met in a drum shop and decided to take music classes together; some 30+ years later they've already played along with classics Pharoah Sanders, Herbie Hancock, Jah Wobble, Bill Laswell, and lots more. Grandpas alrite, but staying on that youthful, colourful vibe; a certain airy touch, a certain liquidness and lushness. Digitals are barely used in favour of all kinds of instruments, which sound as closely recorded as groovy indeed (my tip: if nothing else, this stuff is mixtape-goodness, to help you break 'em up a bit.). Produced by Carlos Ni?±o (AmmonContact), also a known promoter of Cali-based acts Build an Ark, The Lifeforce Trio, Blackalicious, Cut Chemist, etc.

02. We Swam
03. Star Bed
04. The Moon Versus the Sea
05. Photographs
06. 8.52am Goodbye
07. We Ran
08. Quixote
09. The Curtain of Every Morning
10. Mytikas

Feeling a bit uninspired for such immensely inspiring music... The non-verbal can be such a fuck-up to review. Sometimes it just vanishes. Well, no great loss to literature, surely. I could dodge the problem by speaking of people, scenes, seasons, or the feelings this might express, but hardly a solution. Try the Milk Factory instead - they somehow wrote lots and quite nicely. And 4,7/5 seems fair. I hate to be so specific, but again you're gonna need your headphones. Make that some sort of in-house rule.

El Michels Affair
Shaolin Series, Vol. 2
Truth & Soul 2006

A. Duel of the Iron Mic
B. Bring the Ruckus

A mixed bag today, starting with the second chapter in the "Shaolin Series" collaborations between El Michels Affair and the Wu-Tang... GZA's Liquid Swords track gets its treatment with added strings and horns, to be followed by my least favourite from Enter the Wu, but possibly their most hard-hitting interpretation yet. Really looking forward to more of these 7-inches, and perhaps a full collection on CD, though highly unlikely.

The Good, The Bad & The Queen
Herculean CD5"
Parlophone 2006

01. Herculean
02. Back in the Day
03. Mr Whippy [ft. Eslam Jawaad]

I don't know how many of you know, but this is actually Damon Albarn's new band, the singer for Blur and the Gorillaz. To qute the TTL, he "was rumoured to have been working on a solo album with Dangermouse behind the boards, but the project seems to have expanded". Yeh, quite a bit as well, into a freakin' quintet, with former Clash bassist Paul Simonon, Fela Kuti's drummer Tony Allen and founding Verve member Pete Tong included. Herculean is their first single - good stuff, no doubt.

Machinefabriek
Marijn
Lampse 2006

01. Kreukeltape
02. Somerset
03. Wolkenkrabber
04. Schipbreuk
05. J'espere Ca
06. Lawine

I love me some ambient. Last years we've seen, in fact, a comeback of sorts, if not a frenzy: lots of little discs flying through the air, with lots of fluffy clouds across blue skies, mountains, waters, trees, suns - well, what the heck, being a dreamer saves you from the nuthouse (or a criminal career?). Someone with an unbelievably sophisticated name, even in dreamer-ratios, has made himself some reputation for these; he must've had some time to spread some 20 minidiscs in 2 years, plus many fluffy clouds flaking inside his tiny head. Machinefabriek is Dutch. And that's not the most brilliant part; it's how he takes density from the clouds and into Marijn. Judging by looks alone, they might be good old cumulus, but of a more badass variety:

Some antique piano recital recorded on a wax cylinder and then broadcast from tiny blown out speakers in a huge empty warehouse, then broadcast over shortwave radio and finally heard through a battered pair of old headphones.

Nice imagery in that sentence, pretty appropriate too. A total clusterfuck. And again, I love it. Belong, Basinski and Eluvium rolled into a fat fat joint.

Harlassen
A Way Now
Sustain-Release 2006

01. What the River Said [Edit]
02. An Eddy of the Blood [Edit]

Hypnotic, tidal blues. Memories of spiralling currents, driftwood and undertow. Fragments of acoustic guitar and piano swept along in choking streams of violin. Lost in shimmering waves of distortion and turbulent percussion.

The kind of press release that leaves me watering and dribbling all over keyboard. Very wise. And even more, since this Lancashire label looks worthy of instant obsession: "Our aim is to make richly evocative music using primarily acoustic instruments and natural sounds, presented in beautiful and lovingly packaged editions". Well thought out folks, sign me the fuck up. Although it's really more of a self-centered affair, with one Richard Skelton recording under several names (Heidika, Harlassen, Carousell) to highly personal accounts - some editions go as far as 50. Wasn't so lucky as to grab them yet, but they do promise dense, organic, and refreshing things for everyone bored out of mind with tired musics. These two small snippets go a long way expressing what current, conscious artists tend towards, and would put many others out of work. Now someone help me figure how to order from website!
