Pharoahe Monch NOT Shady

So where the hell is Pharoahe Monch? Well I can tell you where he isn't! The rumors that Monch would sign to Shady/Aftermath have been prevalent for the last year or so but now we can "officially" (nothing is really official these days) say that Pharoahe will NOT be a part of the Shady team. The deal that was on the table has apparently fallen through, leaving Monch looking for other label options. - Andreas Hale
A new track supposed to be on "Inner Visions" leaked today, called "Fish Filet".

Can't wait for this album!!!

DJ Muggs, Gza Get Their Chess Game Up With Grandmasters

On Sunday (August 21), DJ Muggs gave selected media the first preview of his upcoming album, entitled DJ Muggs vs. Gza: Grandmasters, a collaborative album between the Cypress Hill's Muggs and Wu-Tang's Gza.
As far as the title and theme of the project, it's a reference to chess, a favorite pastime of the Genius.

"Whenever I work with an emcee," DJ Muggs told BallerStatus.net. "I try to tap into their personality, what they're about as a human being and bring that out more." However, the title pertains to hip-hop as well. "The highest level of the chess masters is the Grandmaster. The highest level of the DJ or the emcee is the Grandmaster -- it's synonymous with both," Muggs explained.

Grandmasters showcases Gza's power wit the pen, as he writes intricate rhymes on a variety of topics from the past and present. One track entitled "All In Together Now," which was the title of Gza's first rap crew, pays tribute to the late, great ODB. Another track pays tribute to hip-hop as Gza sings on the hook: "This is hip-hop/emcees get busy/it's not pop/You frontin', you get dropped/ You listenin' to slanged out goodies/ Timberlands and hoodies/ for the rhymin' that came from the streets."
While acknowledging the past, Gza also keeps the album fresh and up-to-date. For example, on one innovative track, Gza uses all the names of the NFL teams to describe a female. Aside from Gza's lyrical skills, Muggs' power of production shines as well, as he creates hard hitting, haunting beats reminiscent of the early Wu-Tang days. Although, it's hard to overlook Muggs' production, the DJ/producer feels the album is more about the lyrics rather than his beats.

"I was just tryin' to lay a background for his lyrics," Muggs told BallerStatus.net. "You know, when you hear a great lyricist like Billy Holiday or Sade, it's about the words. So, I just tried to create a certain vibe for the words."

Despite Muggs' modest attitude, his beats play a key role in the success of this album. Gza acknowledges this in a lyric, stating that, "The fact that the beat came from Muggs was a hell of a gift."

The two originally worked together in '97 on Muggs Presents: The Soul Assassins Ch. 1, and in '99 people began to push for them to work on a joint project. However, there was no home for the project until Muggs, along with DJ Khalil and Chace Infinite of Self Scientific, created Angeles Records. Once securing their label situation, DJ Muggs approached Gza about making the anticipated album. Gza then flew out to Los Angeles, and 8 days later the album was complete.

In addition to the Gza joint project, Muggs is continuing to work on upcoming projects from his newly founded Angeles Records imprint (see "DJ Muggs And Duo Self-Scientific Ink Deal To Form New Label") with Fontana Distribution, the independent distribution division of Universal Music Group (UMG).

He is also creating a soundtrack score for "Ride," a film about a snowboarding legend, as well as hosting his own Mash Up Radio show on Sirius Satellite.

DJ Muggs vs. Gza: Grandmasters is slated to drop October 25 on Angeles Records.

WHY THERE WILL BE A JAY-Z ALBUM THIS YEAR

There were some rumblings this past week in SOHH's rumor column that Jay-Z would release an album called "The Dynasty 2" sometime in the future. Of course, this is just a rumor - much like the rumor that Ras Kass has signed to Aftermath, which according to my sources, is "just a rumor".

I know I have spoken on this topic before, but let me tell you why I believe that this will DEFINITELY happen by the end of the year. First off, since Jay's retirement, we've already seen him release two half-ass albums - those being the R. Kelly and Linkin Park collabo projects from late last year. Sure, these don't "count" as Jay-Z albums, but he did get in the studio and record. And he went on tour. This, of course, is all common knowledge.

Since the year has started, and Jay has taken a desk job as president of Def Jam, a far different profession than rocking the crowd, or say, pushing blow in a blizzard. Not surprisingly, we've seen him pop up in a few different places. The obvious move was "Dear Summer", his "letter to summer" that helped jump-off Memphis Bleek's album (well, a little bit), but this was in typical Jay-Z / Roc-A-Fella fashion. But within the last month or so, Jay has been popping up a little more frequently than usual. The first thing we caught was a freestyle with his new artist Aztek over the Mike Jones' beat. By co-signing this new southern cat, blessing us with a new verse, he knew of course everyone would do the same. But the trend continued. Somehow, Pharrell got Jigga to jump on a remix of Slim Thug's "I Ain't Heard Of That", which never saw commercial release, but was heavy on the mixtape and deejay circuit. And nobody thought it was too wierd when Jay dropped an extra verse on Kanye's "Diamonds" remix, but when the Young Jeezy album dropped with only a lukewarm buzz, out came the non-album Jay-Z remix of "Go Crazy", eyebrows began to raise.

See what he's doing here, folks? He's Busta Rhyming himself. Meaning, he's jumping on a bunch of remixes to set himself up for the new album. He didn't have to do this before, because like clockwork, we all expected the year end album. But we don't expect it this year, so instead he wants us to expect it. He's giving us little doses, making us say "damn, he was good, I wish he would come out of retirement". As I've said before, don't forget, this is the guy that doesn't write his raps down. Do you think that the rapper that doesn't write his raps down is going to just up and stop thinking of them? Does Celine Dion sing in the shower? Yes, of course! And you know Jay-Z's ass is rhyming in the shower too!

But beyond all of this, let's just say I am wrong. Say Jay just got the "rapping bug" and wanted to jump on a few remixes and that's it. Let's say that the Dynasty 2 thing is just a rumor, nothing more, and a false one at that. Let's say this all just a series of red herrings and that a new album is not going to happen, ever. Dude, listen. Beyond all of this speculation, here is the ultimate reason as to why there will be a Jay-Z record by the end of the year. Drumroll, please......

HE'S THE PRESIDENT OF FUCKING DEF JAM!

Yo! If Def Jam's fiscal year looks like shit, guess who's ASS it is. Jay-Fuckin-Shawn-Carter-Z, motherfuckers! Come on - you think he wanted to do a remix for Young Fucking Jeezy of all people?!?! No, he did it to create some buzz for this half-talent's album! So what do you think he is going to do when Def Jam's gotta show and prove in the fourth quarter? He's gonna drop an album! It's his fucking job now! He has to. The biggest rapper runs the biggest rap label, and you think they are going to let him sit at his desk with his arms folded like "nah, I don't feel like making an album, this year."

Pure speculation on my part.... or is it? Interestingly enough, we saw Jay-Z's new "Dynasty" on the cover of XXL a few month's back. Wouldn't that be something if he recorded another group album, this time with Kanye, Memph, Foxy, Aztec, and the rest?

Expect an announcement soon. - Pizzo

DJ Quik - Black Mercedes (ft. Nate Dogg) [Audio] - August 25, 2005

DJ Quik is coming back hard on September 13th with his latest studio album Trauma. After he recently dropped Trauma: The Mixtape" recently with some new joints, he's been buzzing on the radio with "Fandango" ft. B-Real, "Ladies & Thugs" ft. Wycles Jean and now his latest track is "Black Mercedes" and features Nate Dogg.
Personally I have to say I was starting to get tired of Nate Dogg's repetitive hooks as of late, but he really surprised me with this one. One of Nate's best performances in a long time, this song is an undeniable banger. It's being hailed as an instant classic on message boards, judge for yourself by listening to it below:

'Style Wars' Coming To DVD
By Kye Stephenson and Nolan Strong
Date: 8/24/2005 3:00 pm

??€?Style Wars,??€? the legendary movie detailing New York's graffiti culture and the birth of Hip-Hop, will be re-released on August 23rd as a DVD 2-disc set distributed through Music Video Distribution (MVD).

The DVD includes over 3 hours of special features with artist galleries and interviews, outtake footage, a remastered soundtrack, commentary from director Tony Silver and producer Henry Chalfont and over 200 full trains and burners.

??€?Style Wars documents one of the great American popular culture movements known as Hip Hop,??€? Henry Chalfont told. ??€?At its original release in 1984, the irrepressible vitality of the kids in the film inspired young people around the world.??€?

Chalfont said that movie was filmed before Hip-Hop culture turned into a multi-billion dollar a year industry.

??€?Style Wars was filmed in neighborhoods where the broadest spectrum of
New Yorkers live, many of them suffering from the effects of years of flawed government policies and catastrophic economic changes,??€? Chalfont said. ??€?But the film tells the story about the grass roots response to this neglect.

??€?One of the essential elements of hip hop culture was always that it was about artists taking control of their creative lives. Hip-Hop was a huge revolution carried out against a
background of neglect in a bankrupt city with neighborhoods burning down to rubble, schools slashing art and music from the curriculum, after school programs closing their doors.??€?

Disc 1: The Film and the Filmmaker, features the movie, 23 minutes of outtakes, interviews with filmmakers Tony Silver and Henry Chalfont, interviews with Style Wars editors Victor Kanefsky and Sam Pollard and classic tracks from the likes of The Treacherous Three, Trouble Funk, Grandmaster Flash and many more.

Disc 2: Hall of Fame, includes 32 artist galleries, new interviews with famed graffiti artists such as Blade, Cap, Cey, Crash, Dez, Dondi, Seen TC5, Revolt and Zephyr, etc., plus guest interviews with Fab Five Freddy, Goldie, Guru, Kool DJ Red Alert and a tribute to Dondi and Shy147. Disc 2 also shows a 30 minute continuous loop of over 200 cars and burners with music from Def Jux artists El-P, RJD2 an Aesop Rock.

The movie is selling retail $27.95 and includes a deluxe fold-out booklet with liner notes by renowned Hip-Hop writer/editor Sacha Jenkins.

SOUNDS OF NATURE

Nature Sounds has a nice slew of releases set for the end of '05 and the top of '06. The label will close out the year first with the MF Doom "Special Herbs" box-set, which will carry a beautiful retail price of $20. The only catch is that the entire series of volumes 0-9 will be spread out across two CD's, mixed together by Doom himself. The limited edition package will also include a third disc with previously unreleased bonus beats. In related news, Doom has produced SIX new songs for Ghostface's upcoming Def Jam releases.

In addition to releasing the first official album from west coast mix CD masters, Strong Arm Steady (Xzibit, Krondon, Phil Da Agony, Mitchy Slick), the label will also follow-up with the sophomore release from Masta Killah, "The East Is In The House". The new album will feature the entire Wu-Tang Clan, and will most likely be the last one to do so (due to ODB's demise). The new LP will feature production from RZA, Pete Rock, DJ Premier, Nazarath, and Mathematics. Just before this drops, the label will release a Masta Killah DVD.

Finally, the label has a Pete Rock project in the works called "Next Generation", which will follow in the footsteps of his "Soul Survivor" series, teaming him up with various different emcees. Songs with Jim Jones, Ghostface Killah, Masta Killa, MF Doom, and D-Block have already been confirmed.
