Exclusive: Cannibal Ox Reborn!

Matthew Solarski reports:
Back atcha: Following two chilly years in suspended animation, the hallowed hip-hop duo known as Cannibal Ox have reemerged at last, and they're fixin' to start something. Pitchfork has just learned that the wizards of Ox are planning a follow-up to 2001's celebrated The Cold Vein, which will drop next year on Def Jux. Jux guru and producer extraordinaire El-P will commandeer the boards for the currently untitled release, as he did on Vein. Guest producers are slated to include the RZA and Pete Rock. Hot.

Cannibal Ox's Vast Aire and Vordul Mega/Megilah have each spent the last two years immersed in solo efforts: Aire's Look Mom...No Hands hit us in April of 2004, followed by Mega's The Revolution of Yung Havoks last November. This past April, Vast Aire partnered with producer Mighty Mi for The Best Damn Rap Show. Aire and Mega also contributed to the Wu-indie smorgasbord, Think Differently Music: Wu-Tang Meets The Indie Culture, which blew up shops two weeks ago.

According to a press release, Cannibal Ox have signed on for a "multi-album worldwide deal," which will hopefully translate to a steady onslaught of spooked-out beats and off-kilter rhymes in the years to come.

As for live appearances, the revitalized Ox has one show scheduled so far, on November 12 at Emo's in Austin, Texas. But an eight-date tour of grim metropolises near you is in the works for December.

P.S.: Could be tight. Hopefully.

1 Emcee & 1 Producer - Dropped by Villain

It seems to be a growing trend that MC's team up with just one producer for a collabo project. In the past few years we've seen albums from Neek The Exotic/Large Professor, Likwit Junkies, Madvillainy & DangerDoom projects, Murs/9th Wonder, Buckshot/9th Wonder and Jean Grae/9th Wonder and it looks like there is more to come.

Cee-Lo & Dangermouse is doing their "Gnarls Barkley" project and Cee-Lo is also working on an album with Jazze Pha. RJD2 is teaming up with Aceyalone for an album called "Magnificent City" (this is going to be insane, trust me!!!), MF Doom & Ghostface is recording "Swift & Changable" and there are plans for a Madvillain II and a Blueprint/One Be Lo project.

It's nice to see that the trand continues because for the most part the result is dope as fuck. Now if they could only include some DJ's in the process... <- Word!!!

MF Doom Promises More Danger Doom, Madvillain

de pe pitchforkmedia.com...

Rob Kleckner and Amy Phillips report:
"Meatwad make the money, see/ Meatwad get the honeys, G." Well, that rap is by Schooly D, not MF Doom, but if Doom has his way, he'll be actually voicing Cartoon Network characters, not just rapping about them, on the next album from Danger Doom, the MC's collaboration with DJ Danger Mouse. Danger Doom's debut album, The Mouse and the Mask, debuted at number 41 on the Billboard 200 last week.

Speaking to Billboard.com, Doom said, "I wanted to do that with this album. I started to do some characters after I got the standard songs out of the way, but then [the label] said they needed all the songs in. On the next album, though, I'm doing some characters. I have enough beats from Danger to do half an album already."

Doom is known for creating all sorts of characters, but the idea of a whole album of the rapper hatin' on Meatwad via Shake could be an Adult Swim fan's wet dream. Ew, just the thought of that is really gross.

Doom and Danger Mouse would like to support The Mouse and the Mask with a 2006 tour, but plans are still quite up in the air. Doom hopes they can have Adult Swim characters on stage and in costume. He told Billboard, "I haven't met the human beings behind these voices, so to me, it's still just Meatwad. Everyone should be in costume. If I'm going to have them on the record, I have to have them on the tour." The Smokin' Grooves tour meets Disney on Ice? Start hoarding LSD now.

Doom is also set to voice a character on a Cartoon Network show called "Perfect Hair Forever". He says, "I play a giraffe [whose] name is Sherman. He's Sherman from New York." Meatballs, giraffes, cups, metal faces-- dude's crazy. He also must be snorting Red Bull, what with all the projects he's got in the works.

Doom recently told Pitchfork that a follow-up to 2004's Madlib collaboration Madvillainy is cooking, as are MF Doom and Viktor Vaughn solo joints and, surprisingly, another album with his old school agit-rap group K.M.D. Doom produced a few tracks on the forthcoming Ghostface record Fish Scale, and the pair are in the process of completing a full-length collaboration. He's also in talks with super-producer Just Blaze.

BEHIND THE BEAT: HIP HOP HOME STUDIOS - A GUIDED TOUR THROUGH THE HIP HOP UNDERGROUND
by Rafael Rashid
Ginko Press
160 Pages, 320 Color photos.
Publication: December 1, 2005

Pre-release at www.turntablelab.com

Behind the Beat is a look into the creative spaces of producers and DJ's from the US and UK. Featured are the studios and equipment of some of: Madlib, J Dilla, DJ Design, DJ Premier, DJ Spinna, Skitz, Nextmen, Taskforce, DJ Swamp, E- Swift, Beyond There, Kut Masta Kurt, Fat Jack, Jehst, Beatminerz, DJ Shadow, Dan the Automator, Chief Xcel, Young Einstein, The Grouch, Numark, Cut Chemist, Thes One, J Zone and Mario Caldato Jr.

From the press release: "These photographs are about more than just the equipment. Decades on from hip hop’s birth, producers have an enormous presence, commanding underground and even pop followings. But more often than not, producers are just a name on a record, always in the background. These pictures capture the visual side of the beats they make. They are the images behind the beat."

The book includes a CD of several artists included in the book including tracks by Stones Throw's Lootpack and Roc 'C'.

Author Rafael (Raph) Rashid runs a recording label called Crookneck in Melbourne, Australian, and is co-owner of clothing labels 'Blank' and 'Princess Tina'.
