The marketing and promotion and release of his first two albums (out of four) under the new deal will be shared by Columbia and Def Jam, however Def Jam will control all creative input and A&R for the records. THE ROOTS' GRAMMY JAM

The Roots will again precede this year's Grammy awards just as they did last year, with a private party and 5 hour jam session, hosted by Dave Chappelle, Don Cheadle, and Black Thought. Last year's event was also invite only, with the invite actually being a limited edition Roots 7inch single (yes, I kept mine), so who knows what they will do this year.

The event is sponsored by Dave Chappelle's Block Party, the new Michel Gondry documentary that chronicles last year's concert event featuring The Roots, The Fugees, Jill Scott, Common, Kanye West, Mos Def, and Erykah Badu. The event is also sponsored by LIVE FOR DARFUR, a worldwide campaign co-chaired by Don Cheadle and Djimon Hounsou that rallies high-profile artists to help raise awareness of the crisis in Darfur. LIVE FOR DARFUR's participation in the event is produced by Red Carpet Media Partners on behalf of the Save Darfur Coalition. To learn more, visit www.savedarfur.org. - by Pizzo

Indie West Coast legend, Murs, is preparing the release of his seventh solo album, entitled Murray's Revenge, under a new label, Record Collection, where he was recently brought on as an A&R consultant.

The new album follows the runaway acclaim of his 2004 album, 3:16, The 9th Edition, where he collaborated with Lil' Brother producer, 9th Wonder. The combo of Murs' lyrical virtuosity and 9th's crate-digging, soul-sonic mastery put 3:16 on numerous year-end top 10 lists, including Urb's "Best of 2004," receiving rave reviews across the board. And he re-aligns himself with 9th Wonder once again.

Murray's Revenge captures Murs transitions and ambitions as a writer. And even though he quotes Sublime on the track "Yesterday, Today," Murs states assuredly that "Murray's Revenge is not 'Murs the punk rocker' record." Instead the rapper has moved away from his raw confessional style and flexed his skills as a storyteller.

The album's first single is "L.A.," a classic West Coast anthem, showing Murs' love for Cali and the wild, wild West.

"'Pusherman' is not Curtis Mayfield's story, but he made it vivid," said Murs. "This album is more bluesy, more country and western -- not in sound, but in narrative. Country and western people tell you about their day, but with a twist. Johnny Cash is the perfect example: 'Folsom Prison Blues' is about being in jail for murder, but he never killed anybody; still, he makes you believe it. I can do that, because I've been in those situations."

With his new A&R position at Record Collection, known more for their indie rock releases, Murs gives the label an opportunity to make an impression in the hip-hop world as well.

In addition, the rapper has been expanding his hustle. He recently landed an endorsement deal with the Hurley clothing company; helped produce and star in the 2005 independent film "Walk Like A Man," based on the song of the same name from 3:16 (its DVD release would go on to sell over 10,000 copies) and you can even catch him on TV as a host on the Al Gore-sponsored network Current TV, introducing viewer-created documentaries.

"I expanded the independent game, I've broken boundaries, set examples," Murs said proudly. "I've shown you how to tour 200 days a year, I've shown you how to make your own movie with nothing and put it out. This is all part of me living out my dream. That's what's really behind the Murray's Revenge concept: I get to say I'm an A&R, I get to wear the clothes I want to and get paid for it, and I still get to make whatever kind of record I want to. Now, finally, I get what I want."

Murray's Revenge is slated for a March 21 release.

COLDCUT - "SOUND MIRRORS" - CD/2LP

Image

February 21st: Coldcut's now classic "Let Us Play" is one of the HipHopSite staff's all time favorite cut and paste releases, while their last mix CD release "Journeys By DJ" has been touted by press as "the greatest mix CD of all time" (but that's up for argument). So just who is Coldcut? Matt Black and Jon More, who hooked up in 1987, and we're made famous by their classic "Seven Minutes Of Madness" remix of Eric B. and Rakim's "Paid In Full". They later went on to launch Ninja Tune - that great experimental UK label responsible for "Let Us Play" - among other quality releases from Blockhead, Amon Tobin, Sixtoo, Bonobo, Herbaliser, and Kid Koala, just to name a few.
"Sound Mirrors" is the group's first studio album in 8 years, featuring 12 new tracks, including collaborations with Jon Spencer, Mike Ladd, Roots Manuva, Fog, Saul Williams, and others. The first 10,000 copies of the album come in "fancy pants" die-cut packaging, including a sticker and poster, plus a demo of their VJamm software on the enhanced portion of the disc. Honey, they've got rhythms they ain't even used yet.

1. "Everything Is Under Control (feat. Jon Spencer and Mike Ladd)"
2. "True Skool" (feat. Roots Manuva)
3. "Man In A Garage (feat. John Matthias)"
4. "Walk A Mile In My Shoes (feat. Robert Owens)"

DON'T ASK FOR IT BY NAME, WHITE PEOPLE.

Nas told the NY Times that something different came to mind for the title of his next album, Nigga. Whether he rolls with this one or not, we don't really know, but he told the times this at a MAC Cosmetics party for Diddy's new fragrance.

"That's the name right now," he stated. "I don't care about sales," he said. "Well, tonight I don't. I never was a big sales dude, so it never really mattered."

Jana Fleishman, a spokeswoman for Def Jam, says she spoke with Nas later on and claimed he had changed his mind. "Nas says he was being facetious. He just started recording last week."

BLOCK PARTY

Blockhead spoke recently about some upcoming projects he is working on. He will release a second single from his critically acclaimed sophomore album, "Downtown Science", which will be "Crashing Down" b/w "The Art of Walking", and an unreleased song he did with Cage. Block is also working on new songs for the next Aesop Rock album, as well as new material for Cage, Despot, Chase Phoenix, and others. Finally, says Block, "I'm in the very very early stages of putting together an ep of happy beats. I'm not joking...i'm serious..."
