Pharoahe Monch album News

Image

Pharoahe Monch has joined forces with Loud Records/SRC founder Steve Rifkind to release Monch's first album since his 1999 debut Internal Affairs, on Rawkus Records.

Pharaohe Monch will release his highly anticipated album, Desire, on a new unnamed label Rifkind has founded and runs, after a bidding war which is also distributed by Universal.

A bidding war for Pharoahe's new album was reportedly between Sony, Bad Boy and Eminem's Shady Records.

Rifkind eventually signed the rapper after hearing what he dubbed "the album of the year."

"On a creative and business level, I've never been this excited," Monche said in a statement. "I've had the time to work on this album, and being a perfectionist, it's really come to fruition. It's very soulful, very gospel, a fresh, new sound for me. It shows so much growth spiritually, almost as if I'm a new artist. When I play the record for people, that's how they hear it."

Pharoahe Monch was a member of the renowned group Organized Konfusion.

After releasing his critically acclaimed album Internal Affairs, label politics slowed down the rapper's career.

Rawkus signed a distribution deal with MCA and later, the label was absorbed into Geffen.

Monch recorded an album for Geffen but the recording was never released as the rapper attempted to free himself of the Geffen deal.

"There's an element of obvious patience, but that's just who I am," he said. "I've learned that it was best for me to wait for the best situation. Everything happens for a reason. This is my expression and creation. I know people are waiting for this album, and I respect my fans enough to put out quality music."

The first single from the album will be the white labeled "When the Gun Draws," which will be accompanied by a short film.

"It's a concept record," said the rapper. "About life from the perspective of a bullet."

The first commercial single will be "Push."

No release date was available for the album as of press time.

At the Smithsonian, Hip-Hop Is History
Museum Launches Collection of Genre

By David Segal
Washington Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, March 1, 2006; Page C01
NEW YORK, Feb. 28 -- Just another day for the Smithsonian: The place unveils a new project and some guy at the news conference recalls his days forcing women into prostitution.

"I decided I really wanted to try this pimp thing, so I went into the street and started getting me some 'hos."

The dulcet musings of Ice-T, ladies and gentlemen, gangsta-rap pioneer, "Law & Order" regular and now -- ta da -- Smithsonian donor.
Ice and a handful of other urban legends packed a conference room full of television cameras and reporters Tuesday at a Midtown Manhattan hotel to unveil a Smithsonian initiative for Washington's National Museum of American History, "Hip-Hop Won't Stop: The Beat, the Rhymes, the Life." The goal is to gather artifacts donated by rappers, dancers, DJs and record executives and amass a definitive collection, one that captures hip-hop's 30-year journey from inner-city subculture to international phenomenon.

Museum officials predict it will take three to five years before they warehouse enough material for a full-scale exhibit, but they say some of these pieces will be on view by summer, and they're certainly off to a colorful start. At the press conference, a parade of luminaries took turns at the microphone, starting with entrepreneur Russell Simmons and ending about an hour later with a break dancer named Crazy Legs.

Sage Francis Makin' Dem Power Moves. Big Dog Status!

Image

Whenever I think about the hip hop hustle no name stands out more in my mind than that of Sage Francis aka Sage Frenchkiss, C.E.O. of Strange Famous records and independent hip hop icon. The Strange Famous Records mogul has been making some moves as of late, updating his website (sagefrancis.net) with audio, video, and a working online store, launching a non-profit (knowmore.org), and furiously signing talented and underexposed hip hop acts to his growing label. The first release from Strange Famous Records in 2006 will be from Reanimator, the man who put in mucho work on the Healthy Distrust LP, followed by the SFR??€s newest roster member, Prolyphic. Also look for Sage to make an appearance on the new Kool Keith LP this spring. Oh Sage!

M-1 of Dead Prez Drops Solo

Image

M-1, one half of Dead Prez, is releasing his debut solo album 'Confidential' on Koch Records. This of course does not mean that Dead Prez are headed for a breakup, the duo are still together. "Confidential is the next chapter in the Dead Prez book", explains M-1. The album features appearances by Styles P, Q-Tip, and M-1's partner-in-rhyme Stic.man. Dead Prez recently made headlines for dropping a book "The Art of Emceeing" and for the cops shutting down their Hurricane Katrina benefit concert in Los Angeles. 'Confidential' will be in stores for a March release.

The Juice Crew 2

Image

Roxanne Shante and MC Shan are reportedly looking into reforming the Juice Crew, one of hip hop's true early powerhouses. The original group consisted of Big Daddy Kane, Kool G. Rap, Craig G, MC Shan, Shante, Biz Marke, and others. Shante and Shan are hoping to restart the group with fresh talent and are even allowing for open submissions at [email protected]. Davey D reports that Shan and Shante had the following to say: "We can make it any ole' crew," MC Shan says. "But we want to make it something people know so it can carry on the legacy of the original crew." Shan also emphasizes, "The new Juice Crew will be something different; not the 'I slang drugs, I got jewelry' rhymes; it'll be more talented artists." It will be interesting to see what if anything comes of this.

MEDIAN TO HALFTOOTH
Justus League core member, Median, has just
signed a multi-album recording contract with
Halftooth Records, the label responsible for
Wordsworth's "Mirror Music" release. The debut
album will be entitled Median's Relief, and will
feature production from 9th Wonder, Khrysis, and
Oddissee, as well as tracks with other members of
the Justus League and Halftooth Records families.
"We are very excited to welcome Median into the
Halftooth family. While Median brings his own
unique sound and vibe, he is a perfect fit for
Halftooth Records. Low Budget [which consists of
Oddisee, Kenn Starr, Kev Brown, DJ Roddy Rod and
more] and The Justus League are two of the most
talented and groundbreaking Hip-Hop crews to
emerge since the legendary Native Tongues in the
early '90s, and we are very happy to now be a part
of both of these growing movements of incredible
artists. We are really looking forward to a long
and successful relationship with Median, and we
are thrilled about sharing his music and
incredible talent with the world" says David
Schrager, president of Halftooth Records.
Median had this to say on his deal with
Halftooth Records: "I am very excited about
signing with Halftooth Records. I have a lot of
respect for the family at Halftooth as well as the
music that the artists make. It seems to me that
what I bring to the table fits well with the
roster that they already have in tact. With that
said, expect big things from the Halftooth camp in
the very near future."
The album, Median's Relief will be released in
Fall of 2006.
