DJ Dee Ville - Def Mix Seven ( 2008 )

Image

This month it was announced Run DMC will be inducted into the Rock N' Roll Hall Of Fame. It's something the mainstream media has been covering but most rap blogs haven't addressed. I guess for most of us the 'Rock N' Roll Hall Of Fame' doesn't mean shit, plus it's way overdue. We know why Run DMC are important and we don't need validation from the same people who told us Hip Hop was bullshit 20 years ago.

I ran into DMC last week. He was out here in LA promoting a few projects intending to put the creativity and ingenuity back into Hip Hop. We talked for hours about the old days, from Cold Crush to Kane, G Rap and every act in between. For one of the first rap millionaires, a multi-platinum recording artist, an ambassador that has taken Hip Hop all around the world, it amazed me how humble D is and how much passion he still has for the art-form. It made me realize; the hall of fame, and any accolades Run DMC have garnered over the years are as much ours, for our culture and our acceptance as they are for them.

It's been a while since I did an 80's Def Mix, inspired by my talk with D, I threw a jammin' mix together this weekend. Here are 20 good reasons to be proud that old school Hip Hop pumps inside your veins...

Top Choice Clique - Boston Legal

Image

Straight Outta Tha Bean. Circa early 80’s. Top Choice Clique was a talented crew of hungry young B-Boys determined to make a mark on their local Hip Hop scene. For an underground crew with a deep love of raw Hip Hop, Jawn-P, DJ Gemini and MC Force went way beyond their own expectations when they made national noise with a dope series of independent releases. In 1993 TCC signed to major record label A&M. After a soundtrack feature and 12” release the group found their album shelved and time stood still…Until now; as Boston’s own Brick records has collected all those lost and forgotten tracks and repackaged an anthology and legacy to showcase the Top Choice Clique as true pioneers of the Golden Era. I caught up with rapper Jawn-P last week for an interview.

What year did Hip Hop became apart of your life?

Like all kids I was a true product of my environment growing up so I didn't know much about Hip Hop due to the fact that I wasn't exposed to it, there was very little rap in mainstream culture back then, so I guess Hip Hop became a part of my life in 1984 when I switched schools to a middle school that was right next to the pj's in Malden, that's where I met Gemini, he put me on with Run DMC’s ‘Rock Box’, I was hooked instantly.

Who were the crews you first heard locally and nationwide?

No question, the first crew I followed on a local level was RSO Crew, they were the first group from Boston to put out product. On a national level Run DMC, and the Fat Boys is what I had on Blast, from 84-86 they didn't release a bad album, I feel the Fat Boys are overlooked due to the way they went out, but I can't hate them for trying to get paid.

What inspired you to start rhymin'?

The level of respect MC's got back in the day inspired me to try to get mine, plus I couldn't sing or dance. I started out as a beatbox, but I was weak and further more I was down with Andy-F who was a very good beatbox, so I had to find my place to fit in.

Any conflict around being a racially mixed crew back then?

I'm sure there was some heads that hated on the racial make-up of the group, but we never really paid any attention to what anyone said or thought about us. I believe the location of our origins hurt us more than our race; we were from what was then considered the suburbs. Most of the other groups were from the right zip code I guess. What did Rakim say? It ain't where you’re from, it's where your at? That shit applied to us.

What was the Boston scene like in the 80's?

Definitely an exciting time, I'm fortunate enough to have two different perspectives first as a fan, and then as a participant. We had crews like RSO, and TDS Mob releasing wax, also when the compilation Boston Goes Def (EDO G’s debut) dropped, it showed people in the game that Boston was definitely an untapped resource.

How did Top Choice Clique form?

We met through legendary Boston radio host Magnus Johnston, he hosted a college radio show. His show was made up of mostly local music, Guru from Gang-Starr was a regular contributor. Keith was from the Bean before he started reppin’ the NYC.

Did you write rhymes as a group or individually?

Our process was the same from the beginning until the end. Force would lace the instrumental, and then we would lock ourselves in his home studio, until we had written and recorded our lyrics together, which developed our chemistry.

How did you hook up with Waltz records?

We found Waltz Audio in a music magazine. Tom Waltz had an 8 track analog studio, and charged us $8 an hour for our first few sessions. Eventually we ran out of money to record, and Tom stepped up and gave us spec studio time. Tom believed in the sound and offered to press a 12".

What do you view as the greatest achievement of your Hip Hop career?

Hands down the greatest achievement of our career collectively is the release of Reel Chemistry The Anthology. There have been a number of singular achievements that were very cool like appearing on BET and MTV Raps but to finally have a complete body of work to reflect on is by far our greatest achievement, even if it did come 13 years after the fact.

Image

Promote the album a little…

The new record is split into two disc's. Disc 1 is basically the unreleased A&M record we did back in 95, It truly is a Golden Age record that has been preserved in it's original state, which is a good thing. Disc 2 is comprised of original 4 track cassette demos from 1987-95. You can hear our sound being shaped and influenced by what was happening in the game.

How did you get hooked up with Brick Records?

Through my homeboy Esoteric, we discussed and agreed in principle to release the anthology at Eso's wedding. They did a great job capturing and then developing our vision of the record. They are very good at what they do. We consider ourselves to be somewhat a pioneering group in Boston, so it was natural fit to put this record out with Brick, they are pioneers in their field as well.

What's been the response to the album?

Overwhelming and very humbling. We are happy with the response thus far.

Any chance TCC will reform for new songs?

Force and I have been plotting some new music. We may return to the studio this winter.

Final shouts or messages?\

Force, Gemini, Marino, Gino, Brick Records, Nabo Rawk, Recall, Salt La Rock, DJ Dee-Ville for hooking this shit up. Good look and I would like to give a special shout out to Xavier Patrick Ryan, welcome to the world lil’ Homie!

T La Rock

Image

Is it a bird, is it a plane? Is it a rapper analyst, superior poet, Shakespeare with a twist? Let me say right here, right now, T La Rock is one of my favorite rappers of all times and this mix has been coming for years, in fact; I originally made a mixtape like this 20 years ago.

This of course is the perfect compliment to the Treacherous Three mix I hit you off with a month ago. Aside from T being Special-K's older brother, T La Rock's records continued the lyrical evolution of Hip Hop and took it to astounding new heights. T was viciously cerebral and lyrical beyond his time, even beyond present time. If Kool Moe Dee was the inventor of the ‘Fast Rap’ T La Rock was the creator of the ‘Big Word Style’; a complicated, intricate and intelligent lyrical onslaught very few of today’s MC’s could compete with. What follows is a short interview I had the honor of doing with T this last week.

When did you first get involved in Hip Hop?

As a young kid. I was a part of Hip Hop since its birth. The Year; 1974. Place; the Bronx.

Who were the groups that were around at that time?

Kool Herc & The Herculords. I was around when Grand Master Flash had 3 Emcees. Before Fantastic 5 were the L-Brothers. Before Keith Keith of the Funky 4 picked up a mic. I started out as a breakdancer, then I became a DJ and Emcee. I was in a crew called the Undefeated Four. That was my first crew.

Who was in The Undefeated Four?

DJ / Emcee Incredible T La Rock, DJ / Emcee The Amazing Bombay, DJ Cooley Breeze, DJ B-O Zonk. My brother Special K used to come around then as well. At that time he was known as KK. I introduced him to rap around 1978.

In 1984 T La Rock’s first single was released. ‘It's Yours’ was the first song ever produced by Rick Rubin and his Def Jam production company. Rick Rubin had originally arranged to put out a record by Special K and Jazzy Jay but arrangements with Special K fell through…

How come K bowed out of recording ‘It’s Yours’?

K couldn’t record with another label because he was under contract with another company (Sugarhill). The music industry was very different back then, so I took his place. DJ Louie Lou was supposed to record with me, but due to circumstances beyond my control it did not work out that way.

How was it working with Rick Rubin?

Working with Rick was great. I had the opportunity to watch him grow. That was his first experience with producing Hip Hop records; he was into Rock N Roll. Def Jam was his home made label at that time and the 12” was sold from his dorm room in NYU.

T La Rock’s music represented an era of change musically from the disco and live band rap of the earlier generation. 'It's Yours' along with Run DMC's 'Sucker MC's' broke ground for the raw, stripped down production that followed. A backing track often just consisted of a drum machine, sound effects and scratches. I understand Moe Dee's point about LL Cool J bitin' his style, but it was T La Rock, that LL really lifted his whole B-Boy presence from.

Image

So LL personally thanked you for kick starting his career?

LL Cool J thanks me each time we speak for influencing him.

Another stroke of 80's genius was the universe conspiring to unite T with Canadian beat monster Kurtis Mantronik, the music they made remains powerful, awe inspiring and technically unmatched to this day.

What drew you to the sounds of Mantronik?

We were label mates. He loved my style of rap and I loved his futuristic sound. Here’s some info for you, I, with the help of DJ Louie Lou produced the majority of my songs.

Another fact many people may not know is T suffered a life threatening injury to his head in 1994. Doctors had to pump the blood to keep his brain from swelling. They gave him a 20 to 30 percent chance of surviving. Thankfully he pulled through and is geared up to tell his story to the world.

What’s happening with the T La Rock movie?
Antwone Fisher wrote the script. It’s gonna be about my life as far as my contributions to Hip Hop and about the injury I suffered in '94. There are a few Hollywood heavy hitters in on this project.

How did you get introduced to Antwone fisher?
I was approached by a well known movie producer and casting agent by the name Bonnie Timmermann (Man On Fire, Carlito’s Way). She is the person who first suggested I should share my life story in the form of a movie and I met Antwone through her.

What’s next for T La Rock?
In addition to the movie, there will also be new T La Rock songs for the soundtrack and touring is next.

A big thanks to T La Rock for taking time out to answer my questions and for everything he did and continues to do for the love of Hip Hop music. I wish him every success in his new endeavors and life long good health.

Treacherous Three - Treacherous, Perpetuous MC's

Image

Lyrics? Did somebody say lyrics? It's no understatement to suggest that The Treacherous Three are one of the top five greatest rap groups of all time. Formed in the late 70's Manhattan and inspired by the stage shows of The Furious 5 and DJ Hollywood; the fast rhymes of Kool Moe Dee, LA Sunshine and Special-K would eventually change the way rap saw itself. They released a slew of hit records during the early 80's on both the Enjoy and Sugar Hill labels and after an 8 year hiatus they reformed for an album on itchiban records in 1994.

I concocted this mix to put the whole Treacherous legacy in perspective. I tried to give it a live feel by linking in freestyles and perfomances so you can understand what these guys did for Hip Hop on and off record. The mix ended up over 100 minutes long, so it's more of an ipod jammer than a cd burn; but that is almost poetic in itself. It's beautiful that this music has survived through the changes of the ever fickle music industry and multi format modern technology...

What Happened Next?

Image

Kool Moe Dee's solo career is well documented. It's a testiment to his raw lyrical ability that he managed to sustain a career over three decades. The man is and was an absolute genius.

Special-K was himself an incredible rapper with complicated diction and finesse; unfortunatly for us he bowed out of the rap world in 1987.

LA Sunshine was a great and severely underated rapper; a master of stage presence with a character and charisma unequalled by so many rappers that followed him. He remained inside the music industry working as choreographer.

Big Daddy Kane - King Asiatic '86-'92

Image

Nobody with any signs of sanity would disagree that Kane is one of the greatest rappers of all time. For wordplay, flows, versatility, style and presence he is in a league of extraordinary rap gentlemen. Kane was responsible for some of the dopest anthems of Hip Hop's golden age. Unfortunately he never dropped an all out classic album during those years.

'Long Live The Kane' was cool, but it wasn't a classic. I remember being disappointed when It dropped. The 'Raw' remix wasn't as Raw as the original, 'Set It Off' had a better remix off the album, as did 'I'll Take You There'. I preferred the first version of the 'Somethin' Funky' beat and then of course there was the obligatory lame love track. 'It's A Big Daddy Thing' had four classic joints and a whole lot of posturing. I never understood why they put the 'Wrath Of Kane live version' on the cd. The original track is a piece of musical magic. I'm not sure why it wasn't a US A-Side 12" or why the original version never made it to an album.

Nu, u gotta feel this shit...and u don't!
