KRS-One launching Hip Hop TV Station

Today on New York's Power 105.1 FM station on the Ed Lover show, KRS-One announced that he's launching a Hip Hop TV station as an outlet for the entire hip hop artform.

KRS said that the new station that should be launched on a premium channel by the summer will have a basic version made available to New Yorkers for free due to New York being the birthplace for hip hop. But besides that, the premium channel should be exclusively for everyone on cable through satellite and will provide and showcase underground hip hop, old school artists, international talent, independent acts, unsigned acts, mainstream acts, R&B influenced by hip hop, etc.

Kris said that no one will be excluded from the network. Kris made clear that the RHN, which is short for the Real Hip Hop Network will cover the whole hip hop genre, which he stated was in desperate need as an alternative to the commercialized BET and MTV.

KRS claims that there is no true alternative on television for hip hop music, which is why he has taken the route of formulating a platform for everyone. Also according to Kris, the network may contain a various amount of programs dealing within the hip hop cultures with round the table discussions featuring a variety of artists, children programming in the form of hip hop, documentaries, a female MC version of American Idol, and so on.

In addition, the RHN will assist in breaking new acts by possibly helping to make videos for unsigned acts and then providing video outlets for them on top of that. Kris stretched the point that it's important for hip hop to be in charge of it's own image and how it's perceived to the world in this day and age, where hip hop is being given a black eye and is basically the scapegoat for the ills of today's society.

Top 10 Hip-Hop Projects That Never Happened

We've all heard them before. One of favorite artists announce they're connecting with another one of our favorite artists to create a super-duper, end of the world, change the game forever type of project. Then they leave us hanging for years and years and years. Well, we've compiled a list of 10 projects that got us so hype, we put our $15 under our mattress waiting for the day that the album would hit store shelves.... I just used my $15 bucks on gas the other day...

10. Masterpiece Theatre – Black Thought

MCA Records is to blame. Thought was recording his solo album, Masterpiece Theatre, and when it was nearly complete MCA shelved it. Some of the songs, like “Thought @ Work”, appeared on The Roots’ Phrenology album. Now most fans are just looking forward to Dangerous Thoughts, a collaboration album between Thought and Danger Mouse.

9. Thelma & Louise – Lil Kim & Foxy Brown

Back between like 1996 and 1999, Foxy Brown and Lil Kim were the hottest female hip-hop stars in the spotlight. Both had hit records, both were aligned with the top of the crop emcees Jay-Z and Biggie and both were easy on the eyes. Too bad females can’t get along enough to put together a dope project.

8. Original Murder Inc. super group of Jay-Z, DMX & Ja Rule

Before Murder Inc. was a record label, it was a super-group with Ja Rule, DMX and Jay-Z. They had a few joints together including “Time to Build” on Mic Geronimo’s Masta I.C. album, “Murdergram” from the Streets is Watching Soundtrack and “It’s Murda” on Ja Rule’s Venni, Vetti, Vecci album. They seemed serious about it for minute, but then they all blew up solo-wise and didn’t have time for each other anymore. So sad.

7. One Nation - 2pac & Boot Camp Clik

In order to diffuse any semblance of west coast and east coast beef, Pac invited Black Moon, Smif n’ Wesson and the rest of the Boot Camp Clik to his crib in L.A. to record a collaboration project in 1996. Unfortunately the project was never released due to Pac’s death, but songs here and there have trickled out to the public but Pac and the Clik’s vision was never realized.

6. NWA reunion with Snoop

Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, and MC Ren reunited for the hot track “Hello” on Ice Cube’s “Peace” disc and then again for “Chin Check” where Snoop took Eazy’s place for the Next Friday soundtrack. But what happened? Nothing. Keep in mind that Dre is the common denominator here.

5. Bad Meets Evil – Eminem & Royce Da 5’9”

Everyone knows that Royce and Em were boys back in the day and they had a little collaboration called Bad Meets Evil. They released the singles “Nuttin’ To Do” and “Scary Movies” back in 1999 and had “Bad Meets Evil” on the Slim Shady LP. Then Em blew up, and it seemed like he blew Royce off. Word is they’re reconciling so maybe we might hear a full album one day.

4. Helter Skelter – Ice Cube & Dr. Dre

This project was announced shortly after Dr. Dre and Ice Cube squashed their beef in the early 90’s. Their coming out party was celebrated on the Murder Was the Case soundtrack with the song “Natural Born Killaz”. Too bad Dre left Death Row Records and Cube became a movie star.

3. Oh My God – Rakim produced by Dr. Dre on Aftermath

I remember seeing Dr. Dre and Rakim hopping on MTV’s TRL to announce the signing of Ra to Aftermath and that the new album would be called “Oh My God”. Too bad the only thing we saw was just a cameo on a Truth Hurts single. Apparently Ra was impatient with Dre’s meticulous production perfection and didn’t want to wait anymore, so he bounced.

2. The Commission – Jay-Z & Notorious B.I.G.

We got a taste of what this project was going to sound like when Jay and Biggie joined forces for “Brooklyn’s Finest” on Jigga’s debut album, Reasonable Doubt. Of course, because of Biggie’s murder, the Brooklyn duo never had chance to get started on the project.

1. J. Dilla solo album – J. Dilla

In 2003, Dilla recorded a solo album for MCA Records where he was strictly behind the mic over production from Pete Rock, DJ Hi-Tek, Kanye West, Madlib, Supa Dave West, Karriem Riggins and others. Of course, MCA Records shut down and the album never came out. There were few tracks leaked but fans have been anticipating this project for years. Rumors are that it may drop this summer. Let's hope so.
