Martin Gretschmann's 4th album - quite different from his other works, both with Console and as a Notwist/13&God producer. I liked his beats before, but not always his (featured) vocals; here he takes a step away from indietronics to make something much quieter. A late night bedroom album if you want, it would fit just right in the Morr back catalog. Higlights include two cover-versions by Brian Eno and Sonic Youth (By This River/Starpower), which actually make good use of Miriam Osterrieder's hushed voice, and we have some sparks of early Lali Puna as well. The rest is purely instrumental: six of the tracks appear in J?¶rg Adolph's literature documentary "Houwelandt", so you get the picture.

El Michels Affair Shaolin Series, Vol. 1 Truth & Soul 2006
A. C.R.E.A.M.
B. Glaciers of Ice
Couple of Wu classics interpreted by these New York funk-jazzists. No, not just covering the originals, since last year they actually played the live band for the Clan (re-entering the 36 Chambers in a pretty fun way - check). They also got out a nice album earlier this year and launched a small label (Fastlife), while this is their first in a series of 7-inches for Truth & Soul.
One of those records that I find once in a month and makes me stop and give a holy shit. This is The Necks' 13th release in about 20 years, and it stuns me how they stayed all while so under-the-radar. Well, cause it's a stunning piece of work. If you know how all starry-eyed I got over Triosk, you can tell how surprising it was to find this trio coming from same Sydney, Australia, and performing in the same vein. Neither jazz nor rock, or anything that's gonna set the blog world on fire. It's all about the execution: starting with a simple motif and developing further with gradual changes, while piano, bass, drums and guitar keep it feeling lively and hypnotic. The result is possibly a flawless instrumental album.

So exciting when a label kicks off with a bang like this, 'specially when it's an intimate affair, with no more than 200 copies being sold and Honey Owens (Nudge, Jackie-O Motherfucker) taking things solo. Stripped down solely to her voice and some ambient drones/percussion, it's really forcing one to fully take in the sound. Sometimes you feel it in your skull, sometimes it hits at the neck or the belly. Definitely a body experience - Chakra, ahoy! Maybe it's my frame of mind at the moment, but I'm now at a stage of loving this, playing it again and again, falling for its aural treats. So an album not of geekish interest only, but also highly rewarding. Headphones required; bong can take a rest.

Don't know about you, but I always had a soft spot for robot stories, oh the sad sad stories of robots. His and his and theirs (damn, why do they have to be so sad all the time?). And here's for another. Some time ago in the 60s, a big computer came to Iceland - one of the first to ever be leased around the world for 'scientific' and 'business' purposes (for $2,500/day too). He was about processing and storing, sometimes printing. He wasn't designed to play music, yet by placing a radio receiver nearby and by programming his memory in a certain way, simple melodies would come out. The IBM 1410 was taught to 'sing' - something he wasn't supposed to do. And he sang for a while, until a new model arrived and made him redundant. But he wasn't simply thrown away like an old fridge - instead was given a proper funeral: a ceremony where his operators could express their gratitude and sorrow, while melodies were performed for one last time. This was documented on tapes by J??hann J??hannson's father and based on them, what composer J??hann J??hannson goes back to. Tech-nostalgia? Well more like a homage. Surely we've seen similar things before (maybe this one), but they never had this sense of genuine caring. Backed up by a large sixty-piece string orchestra, it all comes across as a private symphony for the 1410 model and for machines in general. A quiet triumph with a quiet ending. Seriously, by the time you're halfway into the last song, keep away from emotional wreck.

Okay, so I decided that I like this guy, but he's still a biter for naming his label like that, and I demand some serious apologies. Okay, perhaps the album might do, though titles like Lounged, We Can Find Love, or When I Were Young should firmly run it to trash bin world. After all, it would be even easier to dismiss as downtempo crap for the lazy generation, but that's when a little bit of talent comes in, and a certain knowledge for contrast and breakbeats and vocoders and making a song tick in your mind. Lots of ideas, nice balance between vocal and instrumental cuts, and we already have a very decent album on our hands. Buckled even reminds me of the mighty Restiform Bodies, and for that alone I give the kudos diserved. Let's be friends and shit.

06. Cymbalism [Rechezentrum Remix]
Hanno Leichtmann comes from jazz and free jazz/ performed with many international free improvising and electronic musicians/ is part of the Pole live band and the Vulva String Quartet/ sometimes records with Jan Jelinek/ has been known as Static to all dedicated CCO heads, and this latest project feels like something wholly formed from all of his experiences through the years, rounding up both drummer training & digital fuckeries alike. Don't expect some hyper-active free drum sets however, 'cause the focus stays on cymbals alone, and if you're still having doubts, check the title track to fully grasp their effect. From there on, Leichtmann carefully adds some new textures, and even though some of them don't immediately grab you, there's plenty of hidden melody, bass runs and dubby motifs that keep things absolutely safe and playful at the same time. It all comes to full circle with the Rechezentrum remix (which is exactly what Daedelus' was to Flying Lotus - scroll down if needed), and for once I'm begging to hear more from someone called Jackson. One of the better releases this year.
