??€06 must be the year of the fox, because Jamie Foxx??€s Unpredictable is holding on strong to the U.S. pop album charts #1 spot for a second week.

Foxx not only managed to bump Mary J. Blige??€s The Breakthrough, which sold 118,000 copies in its third week, to the #2 spot during its first week, but he??€s also led the charts for a second week with 131,000 copies of Unpredictable sold in the week ending January 8th, according to Nielsen Soundscan.[/b]

Eminem??€s Curtain Call: The Hits, held at #3 with 109,000 units sold, and Mariah Carey??€s The Emancipation of Mimi, rose two places to #6 in its 39th week on the chart with 78,000, as opposed to The Notorious B.I.G.??€s Duets: The Final Chapter, which fell three places to #7 with 74,000 copies sold. The Black Eyed Peas??€ Monkey Business, held at #9 with 63,000.

At 11 million units, CD sales were down 34% from the previous week, but up 7% compared to the same week a year ago. In the first complete chart week of 2006, sales outnumbered those of 2005 by 7%.

Soul Singer Lou Rawls Dies at Age 72
By: Alyssa Rashbaum

January 6, 2006

Soul singer Lou Rawls died Friday morning of cancer. He was 72.

The Chicago-bred Rawls, famous for his smooth and soulful voice, had been diagnosed with lung cancer in December 2004 and brain cancer in May 2005. He was hospitalized last month at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center for treatment of lung and brain cancer, according to The Associated Press, and died at that same hospital with his wife, Nina, by his side.

Rawls' career began in the mid-1950s when he moved from Chicago to Los Angeles and joined the gospel group the Pilgrim Travelers. It was in Los Angeles that he met and sang with Sam Cooke and performed with Dick Clark at the Hollywood Bowl in 1959. He also opened for The Beatles in Cincinnati. In 1962, the singer was signed to Capitol Records through which he released his debut, Stormy Monday, the first of his 52 albums. His hits included "Your Good Thing (Is About to End)," "Natural Man," and "Lady Love."

An adept actor, Rawls also appeared in 18 films including Leaving Las Vegas and Blues Brothers 2000, as well as 16 television series. Rawls was also an activist who worked on the United Negro College Fund telethons in the 1980s and helped to raise more than $200 million.

"Lou Rawls was one of the music world's most versatile vocalists, covering gospel, R&B, soul, jazz, blues and pop," Neil Portnow, President of the Recording Academy said in a statment. "A three-time Grammy Award winner, his deep, smooth, soulful style exemplified his classy elegance and made him one of the most recognizable voices anywhere. And his philanthropic efforts on behalf of many charitable causes further displayed his passion and commitment to helping others through music. We have lost a true musical pioneer, but his legacy will continue to inspire us all."

R.I.P. :(

File This One Under: Wait And See

Image

Well it's that time of year again. The ol' rumor mill is churning out some goodness these days. A source close to UGHH.com who works for Dr. Dre's production team out in L.A. has announced that the good doctor is going to be producing a majority of Jay-Z's upcoming LP. Yep, you read right; Jay-Z's upcoming LP. Rumors of Jay's return to the game have been rampant since the moment he announced his retirement, but the source confirms that Jay-Z has already laid down at least two Dr. Dre laced tracks for the LP, and states that the tracks are molten lava! Of course, nothing has been confirmed officially from either camp. If the rumor proves true, prepare for the Jiggaman to shut down the game in the oh-six.

Ghostface Returns With New Album, Action Figure
January 10, 2006

With his signature gold eagle cuff and oversized medallions, his impeccable collection of robes, his Mexican wrestling masks and his infamous alter ego – Tony Starks a.k.a. Ironman - Shoalin’s favorite son, Ghostface Killah, is hip-hop’s resident superhero. And don’t think he doesn’t know it: this spring he is set to release a limited edition 9” tall action figure of himself (www.theghostfacedoll.com), complete with real 14 karat gold jewelry. But true hip-hop fans know Ghostface as much more than the hyper-animated character he portrays onstage. They know him as one of the game’s most talented and beloved MCs, a gifted wordsmith and rapper’s rapper who also speaks to the everyday struggles of the hood and the average fan.

And legions of them have followed Ghostface throughout his storied career: from a member of the legendary Wu-Tang Clan, to his shotgun role on Raekwon’s instant classic Only Built 4 Cuban Linx album, to his own series of solo classics Ironman, Supreme Clientele, Bulletproof Wallets and The Pretty Tony LP. And on February 28, Ghostface will add to that legacy with the release of his fifth album, and second for Def Jam Recordings, Fishscale.

“Back Like That,” Fishscale’s soulful first single, is vintage Ghostface and is already gathering heat from radio and the streets. Featuring Def Jam’s rapidly-rising young star Ne-Yo, the track finds Ghost in a familiar everyman role, bemoaning a vengeful ex who’s been seen around with a bitter rival. "Ghostface is one of the most original hip-hop artists around," Ne-Yo recently told MTV News. "He's a legend. Just to be considered for the song was an honor. He's true hip-hop."

Armed with production from MF DOOM, Pete Rock, J.Dilla, MadLib, and many others, the broad shouldered Ghost stands ready and willing to carry the Wu Tang’s burden and return rap to its proper course. “Fishscale is just me showing that I can still ball with the best of them,” says Ghost. “With each album I learn, so this album has the most knowledge of all of them.”

Songs like “Kilo,” featuring old friend Raekwon, and “Be Easy,” the Pete Rock mixtape burner released last fall, demonstrate this knowledge with their effortless brilliance. Free of intoxicants (“I haven’t smoked in over 2 years,” says the one time psychedelic fanatic.), Ghost’s flow is focused and free. “This album is gonna put me back on top of everyone’s list,” he says. “Ain’t nobody approaching they music with the care that I do.”

With the recording of Fishscale complete, Ghost – a seasoned veteran of the road – will reunite with his Wu-Tang brethren for an East Coast club tour throughout the month of February. Stay tuned for more info on hip-hop’s Ironman, Ghostface Killah…
