Following the success of his debut album, Fi, Wolverhampton, England's Stephen Wilkinson, aka Bibio, has assembled Hand Cranked, a fourteen track collection of idyllic found sound and lazy Sunday musical ramblings. The release maintains a stylistic bond with his debut, again focusing on his love for saturated guitars, warbling effects, and natural beauty, although this time with a slightly more whimsical feel. An increased confidence is also evident, both in the increased virtuosity of Bibio's guitar playing and with his first appearance as a vocalist on the track, Abberiw. With his first two albums, Bibio has established himself as an exciting new talent, and Mush is proud to provide him an outlet for his work.
dumb title for an album, but i'm diggin' this one.
perfect for spring, perfect for relaxing, erotic massage and what not..

seems like he's made his production somewhat cleaner,
but otherwise expect some of the same "fi" lushness.

15. Never None the Wiser

Daedelus aka Alfred-Weisberg-Roberts returns to the fray with Denies the Day's Demise, a new album of electro-tropicalia. The LA-based musician and producer always tries to do something thematic with every release and the contrast with his first Ninja Tune record could hardly be starker. If Exquisite Corpse was his hip-hop album, this is his techno record. There are no collaborations here, Daedelus choosing to strip right back to his own music and voice. In a further departure, this production focuses on the live elements of his previous recordings rather then his well-known sampling style. This is Daedelus naked, so to speak.

What is it about the new generation of post-rockers that impels them to employ such spell-check crippling appellations? Last week we had 65daysofstatic and now it's the absolute ball ache of Upcdowncleftcrightcabc+start??€¦ DO THEY NOT TEACH PARENTHESIS TO KIDS THESE DAYS?!

Moving away from their moniker for now (which we presume is a favourite computer game cheat code), Upcdownc??€¦ indulge fully in all the orchestral stature and gale-force rock tendencies we've come to expect from the likes of Mogwai and Shellac. The kind of HUGE that caps lock simply can't do justice to, tracks like Not of the Fallen and Stand Shadowless Like Silence broil upwards in an Eos-enhanced dawn of soaring strings, subterranean bass and sweaty riffage that could fell a marauding army. With the former single Shadow still a soaring edict on the power of traditional post-rock (it essentially sounds like a Christmas song being torn to bits by Hades), And the Battle Is Won proves that a silly name never stopped anyone??€¦

Amsterdam may not be known for gritty funk and soul but the diversity, drive and spirit of this great city is in many ways reflected in LSC's music. Even though the Lefties' sound is rooted in the classic funk of bands like the Meters, they are not trapped in the past. Lefties Soul Connection are a band of today creating songs for the year 2006 and beyond. Cody's deadly drum-breaks and Bram's bass lines keep dancers and hip-hop producers equally happy. The raw energy of their music (all recorded on an analog 4 track tape machine at their rehearshal studio) follows no rules and you will never catch them on stage pretending it is 1969 again. The Lefties believe that you have to create your own brand of funk in order to keep the music alive.
check out dj shadow's "organ donor" covered by this excellent funk band.

Tatsuhiko Asano

Beat Records 2002

01. Lemonade

03. Genny Haniver
04. Barnacle Goose
05. Headlights
06. 66
07. Olger
08. Bamboo Leaves
09. Bonjour
10. 50 Rivers

Japanese born Tatsuhiko Asano creates lush melodies interlaced with interesting changes and fresh, charismatic sounds. Teenage influences such as Yellow Magic Orchestra, Flying Lizards, Snakefinger, and a fascination with early radio show broadcasts of Ryuichi Sakamoto later gave way to an admiration of 808 State and KLF and other electronic music. After his graduation from the Tokyo University of Art, Tatsuhiko played in several bands before embarking on a rather prolific solo career which even included exemplary work on the Nintendo64 games 'Doshin' and 'The Giant 1'.

Dave Miller
Mitchells Raccolta
Background 2005

01. Down the Line from Harvey

03. Bump Then Feel
04. She Makes
05. One Light, Dark Room
06. Front to the Back to the Neck
07. Excelsior Interlude
08. Broken Fun, Now Fixed
09. People Just Like Us
10. Before You Leave

Is Dave Miller's beautiful debut album Mitchells Raccolta the first 'minimal broken beat' record? While the question, included within press material accompanying the release, might be intended rhetorically, it also astutely highlights one of the album's distinguishing characteristics. The label 'broken beat' refers to off-kilter, syncopated rhythms that suggest traces of jazz, breakbeat, drum & bass, and house, but it's also used to describe more broadly a polyglot style that elusively transcends a single genre slot while simultaneously incorporating elements of house, breakbeat, techno, funk, soul, and jazz.

Diplo & Tripledouble
AEIOU Two
Ultrasound 2004

one of diplo's many mixtapes - possibly the best he's ever released.
this is truly a "new approach to record improvisation".
breaks, loops, soundbites, all smoothly placed together...
not too perfect, but really damn well.
i've never heard such careful layer work with records before in my life;
yet sounding so unforced and perfectly natural.
definitely one for the sunny days,
this would blow away about 99% of your typical "summer mixes".
you know what?.. it would blow away 99% of all mixes.

04. Know What I'm Sayin'?
05. Samba do Umbigo
06. Anything's Possible

08. On the One and Three
09. Sunshine Lazy
zero dBoys Chris Vogado and Neil Combstock have been concocting a provocative, innovative and addictive brew of hard jazz, electro, latin, hip hop and house, laced throughout with their now signature dirty, heavy basslines.

Even if you've only just heard their name, you are sure to have already enjoyed a hard fruit or more of zero dB's labour, whether one of their early 12" releases such as now jazzfloor classics Come Party and Click or one of the many quality remixes that these went on to trigger demand for by Truby Trio, Suba, Peace Orchestra, John Kong & Moonstarr, Grupo Batuque, Hexstatic, Original Soul Boy, Nicola Conte, Acme, Interfearance and even Sun Ra (co-mixed with Gilles Peterson). Or maybe you simply know them for the bleary head and weary body you were left with after a night out at one of the many parties they've stirred up around the globe?
din press release..

pe album apar si cateva voci pe care nu le'am identificat..
le'om afla la lansarea oficiala.

03. This Year Kindergarten Starts At 10PM
04. No Fun King
05. Taci
06. My Trip to Jekyll Island

08. Camp Lejune
09. Become Another Eagle Returning to Korea '34
10. A World Generated Every Answer Ever for All to Know
11. Jess
12. Living Exponentially

Arguably Merck's finest release since Helios' debut, Living Exponentially features a whole host of well honed acoustic vs. electronic compositions. Think Telefon Tel Aviv without Starbucks or a vocal-less Savath & Savalas. Stewarts compositions are a little more unique than this though, blending ideas from both the Machinedrum project and his lesser known Syndrone works with clipped hiphop beats colliding with fractured electronics at times, yet never resorting to trad presets.

03. Shop Meister
04. Commuter
05. I Dream You Dream of Me
06. Dense City
07. Everywhere and Nowhere at Once
08. The Passage of Time
Alan Abrahams' Cycling marries traditional elements with modern electronics, resulting in a recording of exquisite detail that also moves ??€ a compelling fusion of intricate African rhythms with Berlin house-techno styles. Portable typically infuses tracks with a subtle 4/4 pulse whose hypnotic repetition induces associations with ritual drumming styles. He uses samples of traditional African percussion and vocals but radically processes them so that their natural qualities recede, and, by looping the sometimes fragmentary samples, the materials are displaced further from their origins.

Tristeza
Bromas CD5"
Better Looking 2005

01. Bromas
02. Pingle Language
03. Enveloped
04. Bromas [Extended Mix]
Returning with an EP several albums after the release of their instrumental masterpiece Spine and Sensory, San Diego outfit Tristeza hasn't lost its knack for creepily introspective rock. On Bromas, a short EP out on Better Looking Records, the sort of experimental jazz and pseudo-electronic vibe we've come to expect from the band is tighter and considerably less repetitive than earlier works. However, there's a slight sense that venturing into smooth jazz territory is not always out of the question, and the only element that prevents me from calling 'Metheny!' on the EP's title track is the ominous minor-key structure of the song. It's certainly been a while since we've heard evil easy listening.
