Lord Jamar is pulling double duty these days.

As fans eagerly await his guest appearance on an upcoming episode of HBO's "The Sopranos," the Brand Nubian MC is currently putting finishing touches on his debut solo album, The 5% Album, due this June.

Set to be released via Babygrande Records, The 5% Album will feature appearances from his groupmate Grand Puba and Wu-Tang Clan's Rza , Raekwon and Gza.

"I've always wanted to do a solo album but certain things side-tracked me," explained Jamar via a statement "Like discovering and working with dead prez, [and] acting in things like 'Oz.'"

Jamar, who is a devoted follower of the 5% teachings and even played a 5 Percenter in his recurring role in HBO's prison drama "Oz," will issue The 5% Album with a special 40+ page collector's edition booklet that expounds further upon the principles of the 5% movement, its origin and continual growth, as well as its profound effect as one of hip-hop's cornerstone ideologies.

"Lord Jamar and his A&R Dreddy Kruger, have crafted a brilliant album that pays homage to the ideology that helped shape his life and the entire genre of music we call hip-hop," said Babygrande Records CEO Chuck Wilson via a statement. " The 5% message is a continually vital message to many urban youth. With The 5% Album, Lord Jamar is reaching out and giving a long overdue voice to a culture that he, as well as some of hip-hop's most influential artists, have lived for years."

As SOHH previously reported, Naughty by Nature's Treach will also make an appearance on "The Soprano's" as well.

The 5% Album is slated to hit stores on June 27 . To preview tracks from the album, visit www.5percent.org or www.babygrande.com.

RAKIM BREAKS THE SILENCE

Many have wondered exactly what happened with Rakim's Oh My God album for Aftermath. While rumors ran rampant that the chemistry wasn't there, according to Rakim there was just a little bit more to that. Rakim recently broke his silence to XXL's web site. When asked what he meant by the two moving in different directions, Rakim responded...

"My integrity and my pride for my craft, hip-hop and the hood is something that I don't want to play with. Dre, I respect him. He's a smart cat, man. He knows what's in the mainstream. But at the same time, picking the guns back up and talking about a lot of the dirt that I've been around and seen, I don't think that's a smart move for me right now."

Rakim also alluded to the fact that he was pressured to do certain types of songs...

"Dre got his people around him that would speak to me, or they would ask my manager to ask me. Sitting down in the studio and speaking to Dre, he would most of the time say, 'Well, that's what I want you to talk about, Ra.' Things that go on in the 'hood, things that I've been around - that's what he wanted me to speak on and that was clear.

Ra also mentioned that the proposed deal with Talib Kweli and his manager is still on the table. In the meanwhile, Rakim is halfway done with his upcoming album titled The 7th Seal. He's hoping to have it out this summer.

Immortal Technique Speaks on G-Unit
Tuesday - April 4, 2006

Immortal Technique has never been one to bite his tongue (probably because it hurts like Lil Scrappy says). The independent, politically conscious emcee opened up to XXL about everything from politics to signing with 50 and G Unit in the first of a two part interview. Check out some high lights.

On signing with G Unit:

As a Latino with an overwhelmingly strong fan base of Latino people and someone who has plenty of White fans as well as Muslims and Blacks, I have a diversity wherever I move. I tour the world. But in terms of a deal, I would need something similar to what Roc-A-Fella got from Def Jam; they give 25% and have a large distribution outlet with support from a major. But I need to hold on to those masters since I mix it down and have it mastered myself out my own pocket. I have no A&R. I do it all myself. It??€s no one??€s vision but mine. I always put up the dough for production and pressing my own records. I don??€t think that fits with just about anyone??€s formula. People aren??€t getting signed nowadays by someone who doesn??€t wanna own them 100%, and labels don??€t really break artists anymore. They want someone self-made but don??€t pay them like they??€re self-made. <- BULLYSHEAT!

On politics and the industry:

If you don??€t like politics, stay the fuck outta the music business. Politics is the most gangsta shit in the world. Third World countries are rich in resources??€Africa, South and Central America, all of Asia. The reason they??€re sources for cheap labor, the reason they??€re so poor and wretched and starving is that all their resources are owned by countries like America and Europe, countries that used to own them as colonies and keep the people as slaves. That??€s politics, nigga. That??€s more gangsta than you, your block, your set or anyone you know will ever be. I just tell it like it is, like it was and how it could be, [instead of] like it??€s not, like wasn??€t and how it should be.

A Match Made In Hip-Hop Heaven: Nas/ Rakim Collabo In The Works

God dayuuuum!

Over the years, Nas and Rakim have frequently been compared to each other, both for carving out their own respective niches and for their profound influence on the rap game. But they'd never sat down for a joint interview ??€ until last week, and MTV News was there.

The historic event wasn't short on historic news, either: As our cameras rolled, the two solidified plans to collaborate officially on record for the first time. (Both MCs were featured on a 2003 studio version of Alicia Keys' song "Streets of New York (City Life)" (see "Alicia Keys Locks In Nas, Rakim For New Album"), but the track was never officially released and has been relegated to mixtapes.)

And with both MCs currently crafting their latest LPs, the rapper known as "The God" posed the collabo question to God's Son.

"I'mma ask a question," Rakim said to Nas and everyone in the room. "Me and Nas, we been talking about this for a long time. Our people around us been talking about it and the whole world [has been talking about it], but it's about time, man.

"We gotta do a joint together, man. We gotta do a joint."

"We got to," Nas answered with a smile.

"I'm working on my sh-- now, I know you working on yours, I got some things in my mind," Rakim continued. "If it's both [albums we collaborate on], that's even better. Let's think about that in the next few weeks."

"Yeah dawg, that's done," Nas responded before the MCs began exchanging numbers. "It's done. I'm glad you brought that up."

"MTV, you got it first," Rakim said with excitement. "Hopefully we'll find the right chemistry and right track ??€ because you know [Nas] as well as me, we not going to do it if it don't make sense. [It's gotta be] on and poppin'. I just wanted to get that out of the way, because it's [been] a long time coming."

Rakim said his forthcoming LP, The Seventh Seal, should be wrapped up within the next two months. He said he's teamed up with some investors and has started up his own label; however, his new LP will be distributed through a major label.

"I just wanted to feel free with the way I like doing what I do," Ra explained. "It's hard to do an album where Rakim is pleased, the label is pleased and the world is pleased. I figured [going the independent route], I could do it because I know what the world wants. Hopefully I'll be able to give it to them."

Meanwhile, Nas is tight-lipped about his forthcoming LP, which is his first offering under the Def Jam umbrella (see "Nas On 'Partnering With' Jay-Z: 'I'm Ready To Go ??€ I'm Ready To Kick Ass' "). Rakim is just one of many in the hip-hop community anticipating Nas' next album.

"I always respected Nas," Rakim said. "He was always a lyricist, and I always respect a true lyricist. Me and Nas got a rapport, we go back. He used to come up to Power Play Studios [located not far from Nas' home base in the Queensbridge neighborhood of New York City] when I was working on my early albums. Watching him grow, and having respect for him and getting respect from him, is a beautiful thing."

It goes without saying that Nas and Rakim are two of the best MCs of all time ??€ but did they make it onto MTV's "Greatest MCs of All Time"? Keep checking "The Greatest MCs of All-Time" feature throughout the week to find out ??€ and don't miss "Unveiling the Kings: The Five Greatest MCs Of All Time," premiering on Sunday, April 16, at 3 p.m. on MTV2.

PORTISHEAD WORKING ON ALBUM #3

Yes, it's true. Way back in this column - maybe two years ago - we actually reported that Madlib would be contributing beats to the next Portishead record. While this info came from one Dudley Perkins, this was also two years ago, so things may have changed since then.

But, according to Portishead's page on MySpace (which coincidentally features Madlib in their "Top 8"), the following items were posted in their blog:

Thursday, January 19, 2006: album 3 errr wezz go....geoff barrow wrote to those that might care....still signed to universal records, still a band even after 16 years.... still working on music with ade and beth every day....got a few cool things....its hard to explain why we have been away such along time. i dont we will ever really understand why....... perhaps its just the way we are.

Wednesday, February 22, 2006: still working on the tunes , it seems that were getting into it more now..only time will tell...ade has been working with beth this week at his house, where we have done most of the writing so far.

Friday, March 10, 2006: ....anyways saw beth today and did some rough vocals and had a laugh!!!! portishead having a laugh.....thats not right!! also ive got the french gainsbourg record at last , the tune sounds good...........even if its almost a year later.

More on this, as it develops.....

Snoop Dogg in airport fracas

LONDON, England (Reuters) -- American rapper Snoop Dogg was in police custody on Thursday after being arrested with five other men following a disturbance at London's Heathrow airport, a police source said.

The 34-year-old star, a former member of the notorious Los Angeles Crips gang, was held after a fight broke out when police were escorting him and his entourage out of the airport on Wednesday evening.

Scotland Yard said seven police suffered minor injuries, including a fractured hand, after they were called to the airport at around 6 p.m. (1700 GMT) to deal with a disturbance involving some 30 people in a British Airways business lounge.

"Members of the group became abusive," said a police spokesman, after officers told them to reclaim their baggage.

"Six members of the group, all aged in their 30s, were subsequently arrested on suspicion of violent disorder and affray," the spokesman said.

Dogg, whose real name is Calvin Broadus, became one of rap's biggest stars after his debut album, "Doggystyle" topped the charts in 1993.

Dogg and the other men, all Americans, were taken to two west London police stations where they were held in custody.

Media reports said Dogg was waiting for a flight to Johannesburg in South Africa.

A British Airways spokesman told the Daily Mirror: "There was an incident involving a group of passengers at our lounge where some passengers were rude and abusive to our staff and that is something we do not tolerate."

Gnarls Barkley Outpaces The Boss In The U.K.

Image

May 01, 2006, 10:10 AM ET - Paul Sexton, London

Gnarls Barkley scored a double victory on the U.K. sales charts yesterday (April 30), starting a fifth week at No. 1 with the single "Crazy" and entering the album chart at No. 1 and eclipsing Bruce Springsteen in the process.

The duo of former Goodie Mob principal Cee-Lo and artist/producer Danger Mouse saw its debut, "St. Elsewhere" (Warner Bros.), open at the top of the U.K. album chart as Shayne Ward's eponymous set for Syco Music/Sony BMG fell to No. 2. Springsteen had to settle for a No. 3 debut with "We Shall Overcome - The Seeger Sessions" (Columbia). The Boss' European tour in support of the set opens Friday in Dublin and will make two U.K. stops -- in Manchester and London -- over the weekend.

There were three more new entries in the top 10 of the album chart, with Rihanna's "A Girl Like Me" (Def Jam) starting out at No. 6, Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris' "All the Roadrunning" (Mercury) at No. 8 and Jamie Foxx's "Unpredictable" (J) at No. 9. Released late last year in the United States, Foxx's album spent three non-consecutive weeks on top of The Billboard 200.

The new U.K. album list also included a No. 18 entry for Taking Back Sunday's "Louder Now" (Warner Bros.) and a 41-20 climb for "A Fever You Can't Sweat Out" (Decaydance/Fueled By Ramen) by Las Vegas four-piece rock act Panic! At The Disco.

Jack White's new band, the Raconteurs, had the highest new entry on the U.K. singles chart with "Steady As She Goes" (XL Recordings) at No. 4. Former Libertines guitarist Carl Barat's band, Dirty Pretty Things, vaulted into the top 40, landing at No. 5 after opening at No. 45 on download-only sales last week, with "Bang Bang You're Dead" (Vertigo).

That was one of a number of singles to climb steeply as physical sales were added to their download tallies. Snow Patrol's "You're All I Have" (Fiction) raced 30-7, dance act Chicane's "Stoned In Love" (Universal Music TV), featuring a guest vocal by (Sir) Tom Jones, improved 42-8 and Will Young's "Who Am I" (Sony BMG) 47-11.

Red Hot Chili Peppers opened at No. 12 with "Dani California" (Warner Bros) and Chris Brown's "Yo (Excuse Me Miss)" (Jive), which charted at No. 60 on import sales last week, jumped to No. 13. Michael Jackson's newest Dual Disc reissue -- the 1991 U.K. No. 1 "Black or White" (Epic) -- charted at No. 18.

Tallying charts across Europe, Pink's "I'm Not Dead" (Laface/Arista) finds itself in a third week at the top of European Top 100 Albums chart, while Rihanna's "S.O.S. (Rescue Me)" (SRP/Def Jam) races 20-1 on Eurochart Hot 100 Singles list.
