James "J Dilla / Jay Dee" Yancey leaves behind an impression on Hip Hop that will last the test of time. A bridge between Hip Hop's underground and mainstream, Dilla's contributions ranged from single handedly defining Detroit Hip Hop as a founding member of Slum Village to providing his production talents to Common, D'Angelo, Busta Rhymes, Erykah Badu, A Tribe Called Quest, The Pharcyde, The Roots, Janet Jackson and Macy Gray.
The Shining marked the reunion of Dilla & BBE, who had released Welcome 2 Detroit, Dilla's debut album. The Shining was near completion when Dilla passed on February 10, 2006. In pursuance of his mother's plan that his musical legacy continue, The Shining will be released August 22, 2006. While the news that the album would not be a lost Hip Hop classic brought relief to Dilla fans around the world, BBE was faced with a great challenge.
As Eddie Bezalel, of BBE states, "releasing The Shining would only be possible if we could ensure that it be completed exactly how Dilla envisioned it. The only logical choice for his mother and us was Dilla's longtime friend and collaborator Karriem Riggins." Serving as Executive Producer, Karriem will oversee the completion of an already classic album that features Busta Rhymes, Common, Pharoahe Monch, Madlib, Medaphor aka MED, and Guilty Simpson. The theme of the album for Dilla can best be described by Karriem; This album is inspired by and represents love. All the artists that contributed to this project Dilla considered family and when the world hears it, they will see that the love bleeds thru the music.
As is common with great artists that let their music speak for itself, their history and influence can at times be esoteric at best, which creates a need when they've passed to document their lives in order to keep their legacy alive. To achieve this, BBE decided to bring in Brian "B.Kyle" Atkins of OKAYPLAYER Films to produce a DVD that will accompany The Shining. The motivation for Brian Atkins in producing the dvd as stated by him is; "To celebrate Dilla's life and legacy. For his legacy itself is a contribution to our lives." J Dilla's The Shining will serve as a testament to the fact that legends never die.
