LL Cool J releases 13th disc: Exit 13

Veteran rapper LL Cool J is gearing up to release his final album on Def Jam, the label he helped turn into a hip-hop powerhouse more than 20 years ago.

Exit 13, set for release on July 18, marks the follow-up to 2006's Todd Smith, which sold a disappointing 335,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The appropriately titled 13th disc of his career fulfills his contract with Def Jam, he told New York radio station Hot 97.

Last year, LL Cool J expressed dissatisfaction with the label, which at the time was run by rapper Jay-Z. With Jay-Z's departure earlier this year, LL Cool J has become more optimistic about its prospects.
The first single from his album, I Cry featuring R&B singer Lil' Mo, was released on the Web this week.

LL Cool J, whose real name is James Todd Smith, issued his first album on Def Jam when he was a teenager in 1985. He enjoyed multiplatinum success with such albums as 1987's Bigger and Deffer, 1990's Mama Said Knock You Out and 1995's Mr. Smith.

The 40-year-old artist has also branched out into movies, with roles in such films as Deep Blue Sea and Charlie's Angels.
